Dallas-based Korean fried chicken chain brings the hot spice to Frisco

International fried chicken chain bonchon, known for its unique and spicy Korean-style fried chicken, is opening its first Frisco location at 4760 Preston Rd., #228, in a Tom Thumb Mall at Lebanon Road. They take a storefront that used to be a Chinese restaurant called Hong Kong Express.

It is the third location in the Dallas area, following Addison and The Colony and Addison, which opened in February 2021.

According to a company spokesperson, the restaurant is currently under construction and is expected to open in late spring, hopefully in May.

Bonchon chicken is remarkable for two reasons:

  • It’s fried twice, giving the crust a satisfying chew
  • It has a unique red sauce with garlic, sweet and spicy

The menu includes boneless wings, drumsticks and strips. There are also Korean tacos, which you can get with chicken or with marinated bulgogi/beef, as well as fried rice, fries, coleslaw, and kimchi coleslaw.

Other delicious dishes include pork buns, pot stickers, popcorn shrimp and a fun bonchon with lettuce, avocado and onion in a ranch dressing in a flour tortilla with a choice of chicken or bulgogi.

Bonchon was founded in South Korea in 2002, then came to the United States in 2006. It was still only available in New York when it entered the DFW market in 2013 and found such a frenzied crowd that she had to close temporarily to recover. .

The company has since moved its US headquarters to Dallas and is led by veteran Dallas restaurateur Flynn Dekker, former chief marketing officer of Wingstop, who was named CEO of Bonchon in 2019.

Simultaneously with the new headquarters in Dallas, Bonchon launched a fast casual model and streamlined menu to help support their online ordering operation, which currently accounts for over 50% of business.

Additionally, they are opening a location in Fort Worth adjacent to the Chisholm Trail Parkway, which is new construction, also under construction, with an expected opening date of August.

There are over 100 locations in the United States and 250 restaurants in Asia and the Middle East.
