Fire breaks out at Les Amis Group’s Spanish restaurant La Taperia at the Shaw Center, Community news and featured articles

SINGAPORE – Monday, November 22, the first day that restaurants once again welcome more vaccinated diners, a fire broke out in a Spanish restaurant belonging to the Les Amis group at the Shaw Center in Orchard.

The incident happened in La Taperia and a spokesperson for the group said for the safety of guests and staff, all of their concepts at the Shaw Center will be closed on Monday, until investigations are fully completed.

The spokesperson said: “We have closed all new bookings for today and are contacting all affected customers.

“We will do our best to provide them with alternatives in our other concepts outside of the Shaw Center where appropriate. “

La Taperia was almost fully booked for lunch, the spokesperson added.

The Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to a fire at 1 Scotts Road around 10:15 a.m.

The fire involved an electrical circuit box.

It was extinguished by a water sprinkler system and by SCDF using a single water jet.

About 200 people self-evacuated from the premises before SCDF arrived.

No injuries were reported, added SCDF.

When the Straits Times visited the Shaw Center around noon, a burning smell hung in the air. The entrance to the commercial side of the building had been sealed and buyers had been turned away by building staff and ordered to enter through another entrance.

The ground floor ceiling was dripping with water and the floor was wet.

A member of staff at a nearby restaurant unrelated to the group, who declined to give his name, said he was preparing to open for the day around 11:30 a.m. when security informed them of the fire and their said to evacuate.

“At first we didn’t see any smoke, but then there was thick thick smoke on the second floor as we went down the stairs. There was no real panic. When we got out there were a lot of people waiting, ”he said.

Monday was the first day that vaccinated diners could eat at food and drink outlets in groups of five, whether or not they lived together.

Les Amis group restaurants include the three-Michelin-starred Les Amis restaurant and Japanese restaurant Aoki on the first floor of the Shaw Center, and Tarte by Cheryl Koh on the second floor and Tenjin restaurant on the third floor.
