Restaurant closures, inspections in Riverside County, Aug 27-Sept. 2 – Sun of San Bernardino

Here are the restaurants and other food establishments that inspectors from the Riverside County Environmental Health Department temporarily closed due to imminent health risks between August 27 and September 2, 2021. If no reopening date is mentioned , the department had not listed this establishment as reopened as of this publication.

KFC, 41800 Washington St., Bermuda Dunes

  • Firm: August 31
  • Class: 92 / A, passer-by, issued after the restaurant reopens
  • Raison: Inadequate hand washing facilities. The water that came out of the hand washing sinks was too hot to use.
  • Reopened: Later that day, after the sinks were fixed

Meats and La Alteña products, 8947 Limonite Ave., Jurupa Valley

  • Firm: August 30
  • Class: 83 / B, failing that
  • Raison: Cockroach infestation. The inspector found cockroaches all over the establishment.

The scoop on the go, food truck based at 4664 Vine St., Riverside

  • Firm: August 27
  • Class: Not rated
  • Raison: Insufficient water supply. The truck had neither hot nor cold water, a spokesperson for the health ministry said.
  • Reopened: August 28 after water restoration

Non-closure inspections to note

Here are selected inspections of facilities that were not closed but had significant issues.

Destination café-bar and bistro, at 100 W. Florida Ave. Suite A at Hemet, was inspected on September 1 and received a failure rating of 84 / B with a critical violation. Many food containers were at unsafe temperatures in two refrigerators, one of which was impounded for not functioning. Among the other nine violations were flies in a storage area and the facility used unapproved smokers and grills, which were also impounded.

The Wetzel pretzels at 48650 Seminole Drive Suite 1110 in Cabazon (at Desert Hills Premium Outlets) was inspected on August 30 and given a failure rating of 80 / B with three critical violations. The inspector said the restaurant had an infestation of flies, with flies landing on food equipment and prep surfaces. In addition, some foods were not hot enough and the prep tables were not wiped down with disinfectant. The manager said pest control was coming that day and the inspector warned that if the issue was not resolved within 24 hours the restaurant would be closed. On September 1, the restaurant passed a follow-up inspection with a score of 100 / A and the inspector said all violations had been corrected.

Woody’s Palm House, at 450 S. Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs, was inspected on August 30 and received a failure rating of 84 / B with two critical infractions. Floor sinks and kitchen drains began to overflow during the inspection, which was conducted just before the restaurant opened. The manager chose not to open, so the health department did not view the issue as a closure, but said the plumbing needed to be fixed before the restaurant could open. Also, there were dead cockroaches on the floor, on the dishwasher, and on a shelf under the prep table. Among the other six violations, the restaurant was ordered not to cook anything until the missing baffles in the exhaust hood were replaced, as it was a fire hazard and several areas needed to be be cleaned, especially mold build-up on a wall near the dishwasher. The restaurant gained approval from the health department to reopen after sending proof that the plumbing had been fixed, a spokesperson said.

Better Be Donuts & Coffee, at 1015 E boul. Alessandro. at Riverside, was inspected on August 26 and received a failure rating of 78 / C with a critical violation. Several croissant and dairy sandwiches were at unsafe temperatures in a non-functioning refrigerator that was impounded. Among the 12 other infractions, the surfaces were not disinfected, there were flies inside and the entire facility needed cleaning. The cafe passed a follow-up inspection on August 30 with a 98 / A.

All food facilities in the county are regularly inspected to ensure they meet health codes. A facility loses four points for each critical violation – and may have to shut down if the violation cannot be corrected immediately – and one or two points for minor violations. An A grade (90 to 100 points) passes. Ratings of B (80-89 points) and C (79 or less) fail and usually require the owner to make improvements and be re-inspected.
