Zachary’s Brings Chicago Pizza to Downtown Pleasanton

PLEASANTON, CA – Zachary’s Chicago Pizza, a pizzeria with unique pies not to be confused with “Sicilian style,” “stuffed crust” or other varieties of “deep dishes,” will mark its Pleasanton Friday grand opening, with a party proceeds for the Pleasanton Partnerships in Education Foundation.

Twenty percent of sales from the restaurant’s Sept. 10 opening on Main Street will go to PPIE, a nonprofit that supports schools, students and teachers in Pleasanton.

Zachary’s was founded in 1983 in the Rockridge neighborhood of Oakland by two Wisconsin transplants, Zach Zachowski and Barbara Gabel, who shared a love for Chicago-style deep-dish pizza.

But let go of your “Chicago-style” expectations, because Zachary’s says their Chicago-style stuffed pizza “is something else entirely.”

Made with a thin layer of homemade dough tucked into a deep pizza pan, Zachary’s pie is then filled with cheese and toppings, then topped with another thin layer of dough and topped with tomato sauce and slowly cooked.

A “Thin Style” pizza is also an option, with dough rolled to a moderate thickness and sprinkled with cornmeal.

And if you need to be more convinced of the flavor of their pizza, check out the company’s multiple awards here.

After its grassroots beginnings, Zachary’s now operates restaurants in Rockridge, Grand Lake in Oakland, Berkeley and Pleasant Hill.

Pleasanton’s planned location was actually announced when the San Ramon site closed in July, due to lease renewal issues.

“Fifteen years ago, we opened our third site in San Ramon,” the company said. “We felt so warmly welcomed, and it was an incredible and exciting time as we found our marks and started serving in our new community. Sunday July 25 was our last day of service there before starting our move to downtown Pleasanton.

“It is such a bittersweet time for us, but also filled with joy, excitement and gratitude to our community of San Ramon, which we hope to see later in Pleasanton!”

The Pleasanton menu includes specialties such as: “Carne”, with Italian sausage, pepperoni, salami, bacon and mozzarella: “Spinach and mushroom”, spinach, mushroom and a blend of three cheeses and spices; “Super Veggie”, zucchini, yellow squash, corn, broccoli, red pepper, cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese on a wheat crust; and “Chorizo Special”, Mexican chorizo sausage, green peppers and Monterey Jack cheese.

Salads and starters are also on the menu, and the pizzeria offers a “half-cooked pizza” to take away, a half-cooked pizza to finish cooking at home.

Zachary’s in Pleasanton will be located at 337 Main Street (925) 600-0089. Website and menu selections here or follow us on Facebook at Zachary’s Chicago Pizza.
